Optical illusions in dressing are pretty cool and that is how a lot of people and even celebrities that you see have aced their looks, while hiding their not to flattering areas and highlighting their best bits. It's all science and now you can learn some of the tricks too. Yay!

So let's start with a question to begin with. Did you know lines could make such a difference?? Have you guys ever thought about it?? Maybe, Maybe not? It can be any kind of lines the pattern/print lines in your clothes, design lines or the structural lines of the garment itself. Whether you are already aware of it or not, lines make a huge difference in the way you appear. Yes, that is true.

Here we are talking about the illusion of lines. What are the vertical horizontal and diagonal lines everyone talks about? We probably need to get on some breaking down for those who are probably lost. - by paying a little attention to the lines (print/pattern) or structured lines (the in built lines) in your apparel you can make yourself appear more flattering and appealing, the way you want. Just some little lines on your clothes have the power to do so and that too in a big way.

Let me try to explain it in simple terms, for instance the horizontal lines will make one appear more fuller and broader, cutting the height whereas the vertical ones make one appear talker and leaner comparatively. This being said, you cannot just wear either hoping it would make you appear a certain way, because the distance between the lines, the width and length of the lines also matter equally. For instance, if the horizontal lines or stripes are far apart and are thicker they would make you appear more broader adding width to your figure. Making sense?? The same applies to the vertical lines which are shorter and broader as well. While at it, you should also consider your body frame and the size of the stripes or lines that go with it. A petite frame cannot take too broad or big lines, as it would seem out of proportion and maintaining that is important to make the entire appearance balanced and in harmony as well.

Then what about the zig zag or diagonal lines you ask? Zig zag lines bring in some mystery fun and confusion, which is also great for those trying to create interest. They are perfect to highlight your best body features. The rules of the vertical and horizontal lines apply here too, vertical diagonal designs make you appear leaner and taller and vice versa for horizontal. However, one needs to be careful while wearing these lines, keeping in mind the body proportions as well.

So bottom line, according to your body frame and shape, wear the lines (print/structured) based on their width and height that would make your appear more flattering.

Pro tip: Adding layers can also help play with lines in a different, consider a long shrug with vertical lines (any kind) to make you appear more taller and leaner. and the other way around. Interesting isn't it?
